A candle should be the most relaxing thing in your home, not something you worry about. The good news is that safe burning comes down to a handful of simple habits. Once they become second nature, you get all the cozy glow and beautiful scent with none of the stress. Here are the candle safety tips we share with every new customer, whether you are lighting your first hand-poured soy candle or you have a shelf full of favorites.
Why Candle Safety Matters
Candles are an open flame, and most candle mishaps at home are completely preventable. They usually come down to the same few things: an untrimmed wick, a candle left burning too long, or a flame placed too close to something it should not be near. A little care up front protects your home, your candle, and everyone in it. It also helps your candle burn cleaner and last longer, so safety and a great burn really go hand in hand.
Before You Light: Set Up for a Safe Burn
Most of the work happens before the match ever touches the wick. Take twenty seconds to set things up right and the rest takes care of itself.
Trim the Wick to a Quarter Inch
Always trim your wick to about a quarter inch before every burn. A long or crooked wick creates a tall, flickering flame, more soot, and a hotter burn than the candle was designed for. Use a wick trimmer or a pair of scissors, and remove any burnt bits or debris from the wax pool so nothing else catches. This one habit does more for a safe, clean flame than anything else on this list, and our guide to trimming a candle wick covers it step by step.
Choose a Stable, Heat-Safe Surface
Set your candle on a flat, sturdy, heat-resistant surface like a coaster, a trivet, or a ceramic dish. Glass jars get warm as they burn, so protect wood furniture and delicate finishes underneath. Keep the candle away from the edge of a table or shelf where it could be knocked over, and make sure it is sitting level so the wax pool stays even.
Keep It Away From Drafts and Flammables
Place your candle away from open windows, fans, air vents, and doorways. A draft makes the flame dance, which leads to uneven burning, extra soot, and a higher chance of the flame reaching something nearby. Give it plenty of clearance from curtains, books, paper, blankets, and anything else that can catch. A good rule of thumb is to keep at least a foot of open space around and above every lit candle.
While Your Candle Is Burning
Once it is lit, a few simple rules keep everything calm and cozy.
Never Leave a Flame Unattended
This is the big one. Never leave a burning candle alone, and always put it out before you leave the room, go to sleep, or step out of the house. If you are heading to bed or out the door, extinguish every candle first, no exceptions.
Follow the Four-Hour Rule
Try not to burn a candle for more than about four hours at a time. Burning longer than that lets the wick grow, the flame get larger, and the vessel get hotter than it should. When you reach the four-hour mark, snuff the candle out, let it cool completely, trim the wick, and relight if you want to keep the ambiance going.
Know When to Stop
Stop burning your candle once about a half inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning past that point puts the flame very close to the base of the vessel, which can make the container dangerously hot. When you get down to that last half inch, it is time to retire the candle and reach for a fresh one.
Keep Kids, Pets, and Clutter Clear
Curious hands, wagging tails, and loose sleeves are the usual causes of a knocked-over candle. Burn your candles up high and out of reach, on a clear surface with nothing draped over or leaning against them. If you have busy pets or little ones at home, a flame-free option is often the easier choice, and we will cover that below.
Light and Put Out Your Candle the Right Way
How you start and end the burn matters just as much as what happens in between.
For lighting, a long match or an extended-reach lighter keeps your fingers well away from the flame, which is especially helpful once a candle has burned down into a deeper jar. A refillable USB lighter is a tidy, flame-adjustable option that lives in a drawer for years. You can find long matches and rechargeable lighters in our matches and lighters collection.
When you are done, resist the urge to blow the candle out. Blowing can send hot wax spattering and leaves behind that lingering smoky smell. Instead, use a candle snuffer, or gently dip the wick into the melted wax with a wick dipper and straighten it back up. Both methods put the flame out cleanly and leave the wick centered and ready for next time. Always make sure the flame is fully out and the wick is no longer glowing before you walk away.
Prefer Fragrance Without an Open Flame?
Sometimes an open flame just is not practical, like in a kids' room, a busy kitchen, or an office where you cannot keep an eye on it. That is exactly what wax melts and warmers are made for. A warmer gently melts scented wax with a low heat source or a light bulb, filling the room with fragrance and no flame at all. It is a lovely, low-worry way to enjoy your favorite scents around the house. Browse our wax warmers to find one that fits your space, then pair it with something like the Peace of Mind soy wax melts or the Mahogany Driftwood soy wax melts.
