It's worth setting aside the time for that first burn rather than lighting it for just twenty minutes before bed. Get the first burn right and you've prevented most tunneling before it can start.
Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
Keep your wick trimmed to about a quarter inch (roughly 6 mm) before each lighting. A long or mushroomed wick creates an oversized, flickering flame that burns unevenly, soots the glass, and encourages tunneling. The foil reflects heat down onto the hardened ring of wax, encouraging it to melt inward. Let it burn this way for an hour or two, checking on it regularly, and the raised edges should gradually level out. Never leave a foil-covered candle unattended, and be careful, as the foil and jar will get hot.
The Hair Dryer Touch-Up
For a more even surface on a stubborn candle, you can gently soften the top layer of wax with a hair dryer on low heat, then let it re-harden flat. Move slowly and keep the heat moving so you smooth the surface without overheating the vessel. Once the top is level again, you're back to a full melt pool on your next burn.
