Walk past most candle shelves and almost every jar promises three or four scents layered into one. Single-note candles do the opposite. They pick one clear idea, like bergamot or bourbon, and build the entire pour around it. The result is honest and easy to love. If you have ever wished a candle just smelled like the thing it was named after, this is your line. Our single-note candles in the Monoscent Collection are built around exactly that idea, one scent done well.
What a single-note candle actually is
A single-note candle, sometimes called a monoscent candle, is designed around one dominant fragrance rather than a layered blend. That does not mean it smells flat. Most of our single notes still carry a top, middle and base, but they all point in the same direction so the scent reads as one clear thing instead of a bouquet. Bourbon smells like bourbon. Eucalyptus smells like eucalyptus. You always know what you are getting before you strike the match.
Every candle in the line is a 7 oz glass jar, hand-poured in Holland, Michigan with our standard hand-poured soy wax and a cotton wick, and it burns for 60 or more hours. They are phthalate-free, vegan, pet safe, and the wicks are lead-free and zinc-free. At $24 each, they are also an easy way to try a few scents without committing to one big jar, which is part of why people end up with a small shelf of them.
Why one scent can beat a blend
Blended candles are wonderful, but a single note gives you something a blend cannot: certainty. When a candle is built around one idea, it is much easier to match to a room or a mood. You want something bright for the kitchen in the morning, something warm for the living room at night, something clean and green for the bathroom. A focused scent makes that call simple.
Single notes are also the best way to learn what you actually like. Once you know you reach for warm, woodsy scents again and again, you can shop with intention, and our guide to warm, woodsy candle scents is a good next read for narrowing down that family. And because each one stays in its lane, you can layer two together, like a citrus and a wood, and build your own blend by burning them side by side.
Five single-note candles worth meeting first
The collection runs deep, so here are five that show the range, from bright to cozy to fresh. Each one is a clean example of what a single-note candle can do.
Bergamot, for bright mornings
If you like a candle that wakes up the room, start with our Bergamot soy candle. It leads with orange and citrus and settles on a soft coriander finish, so it is lively without turning sharp. It is the one we reach for in a kitchen or a home office when the day needs a little lift.
Bourbon, for cozy evenings
On the other end of the day sits the Bourbon soy candle, built on vanilla bourbon, leather and oak. It is warm and a little grown-up, the kind of scent that makes a quiet evening feel intentional. This one shines in a den or living room once the sun goes down.
Aged Books, for the reader in your life
Few scents tell a story as quickly as our Aged Books soy candle, a blend of teakwood, leather and cedar that smells like a well-loved library. It is a favorite gift for readers and writers, and it turns a reading nook into somewhere you actually want to sit.
Egyptian Amber, for warmth with depth
When you want cozy but a touch more refined, the Egyptian Amber soy candle delivers. Amber, leather and sandalwood give it a deep, resinous warmth that fills a space without feeling heavy. It is a strong pick for fall and winter evenings.
Driftwood, for a fresh, coastal feel
Not every single note is warm. Our Driftwood soy candle pairs airy ozone with sandalwood and amber for something that feels like a breezy day near the water. It keeps a room feeling open and clean, which makes it a great year-round option when heavier scents feel like too much.
Getting the most from your single-note candle
A focused scent deserves a clean burn. On the first light, let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the jar before you blow it out, usually about two to three hours in a 7 oz jar. That sets an even melt pool and prevents tunneling later. Trim the cotton wick to about a quarter inch before every burn so the flame stays steady and the scent throw stays true. Treat it well and one 7 oz jar will give you 60 plus hours of exactly the scent you chose.
Find your signature scent
