Why Won't My Candle Stay Lit? Fix a Drowning Wick

You settle in for a cozy evening, light your favorite candle, and a few minutes later the flame sputters and dies. You relight it—and it happens again. If your candle won’t stay lit, you’re almost always dealing with a “drowning wick,” and the good news is that it’s usually an easy fix. Why won’t my candle stay lit?

In most cases, a candle keeps going out because the wick is too short to draw up enough fuel, or because melted wax has pooled so deeply that it drowns the flame. A candle flame doesn’t burn the wax directly—it burns wax vapor that the wick pulls upward and the heat turns to gas. When the wick can’t reach that fuel, or when liquid wax floods the base of the flame faster than it can be burned off, the flame starves and extinguishes. What is a drowning wick?

A drowning wick is exactly what it sounds like: the wick becomes submerged, or nearly submerged, in a pool of its own melted wax. You’ll usually spot a very short wick barely peeking above a deep, shiny puddle. With so little wick exposed, the flame can’t generate enough heat to keep the wax vaporizing—so it shrinks, flickers, and goes out. Left unaddressed, the pool only gets deeper each time you relight, making the candle harder and harder to keep burning.

Common reasons your candle keeps going out

The wick is too short

Trimming is important, but over-trimming is a frequent culprit. If the wick is cut shorter than about ¼ inch, there may not be enough exposed to sustain a healthy flame—especially once a wax pool forms. The flame lights, melts a little more wax, and then drowns in it.

The wax pool is too deep

Burning a candle for too long in one sitting can create an overly deep pool of liquid wax. As that pool rises around a short wick, it can flood the flame. This is common when a candle burns for many hours straight, or when it’s nearly finished and there’s little wick left to work with.

A clogged or off-center wick

Bits of burnt wick, matchstick tips, or debris that fall into the melt pool can clog the wick and choke the flame. A wick that has drifted off-center can also lean into the wax and repeatedly snuff itself out against the side of the vessel.

Drafts and air movement

Sometimes the wick is perfectly fine and the real problem is the room. Open windows, fans, air conditioning vents, and foot traffic can all push a flame around enough to blow it out. Drafts also cause uneven burning and sooting, so moving the candle is often a two-in-one fix.

How to fix a candle that won’t stay lit

When your candle flame keeps going out, work through these steps in order:

  • Let it cool completely. Extinguish the candle and give it an hour or two to fully harden before you troubleshoot. Working with liquid wax is messy and makes everything harder.
  • Pour off excess wax carefully. If the pool is very deep and the wick is buried, pour a small amount of the hardened-then-slightly-warmed wax out, or blot the melt pool with a paper towel while it’s liquid. Removing that surplus fuel gives the flame room to breathe. Never pour wax down a drain—let it set on a paper towel and discard it.
  • Expose more wick. Once the surface is solid, gently scrape away a thin layer of wax to free up more of the wick, then straighten and center it. You want roughly ¼ inch standing tall and upright.
  • Remove any debris. Fish out fallen matches, wick trimmings, or soot flecks so nothing clogs the flame.
  • Relight in a still spot. Move the candle away from drafts, then relight and let a full, even pool form across the surface before your next burn.

How to prevent a drowning wick

Just as important, follow the “first burn” rule: on the very first light, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the vessel, which usually takes two to four hours.
